Catherine has a broad commercial and civil practice, with a focus on real property disputes, equity, insolvency, administrative law, and disputes involving Mandarin-speaking litigants or assets in Asia.
With over 11 years’ experience in the legal industry, Catherine previously practised as a commercial litigation solicitor in national mid-sized and boutique commercial firms. She has acted for large-scale property developers, building contractors, engineering firms, Chinese state-owned mining companies, financiers, insolvency practitioners, local governments, and statutory bodies.
As a native Mandarin-speaker, Catherine has extensive experience in advising Mandarin-speaking clients in business and investment disputes, family law and estates disputes, and cross-border litigation. Catherine is able to read and write both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and accepts briefs with Chinese documents. She is also experienced in conducting hearings with the use of interpreters and calling overseas lawyers as expert witnesses on foreign law.
Prior to joining the private Bar, Catherine was an employed barrister in the Litigation and Administrative Law team at the Department of Housing and Public Works where she represented the State of Queensland in civil litigation. She also advised the Department on complex legal issues in administrative decision-making, legislative reform, regulatory enforcement, negligence claims, tenancy disputes, infrastructure disputes, and construction procurement issues.
In 2016, Catherine co-founded the Queensland Branch of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA), a national non-profit organisation which promotes cultural diversity in the legal profession. She currently serves as the Queensland Branch Secretary and works closely with the judiciary, regulatory bodies and law firms to bring together lawyers, legal academics and law students of Asian heritage and cultural background or with an interest in Asia to form a collegiate professional network.
