ABOUT

A North Queenslander who grew up in Townsville, Gavin studied at James Cook University and the University of Queensland (graduating with degrees in Arts and Law from UQ) before undertaking Articles of Clerkship at Roberts & Kane Solicitors in Brisbane. He later became a partner of that general practice.

​Prior going to the Bar in 2007, his career included acting for the Queensland Nurses’ Union in several significant matters including the Bundaberg Hospital Commissions of Inquiry.

Gavin has assisted clients in:
  • Defamation matters including concerns notices and responding to concerns notices, Defamation pleadings, and legal reading service for publishers
  • Employment related law in State and Federal jurisdictions including unfair dismissal, adverse action claims, right-of-entry disputes, executive redundancy, restraint-of-trade, appeals
  • Conducting independent workplace investigations (e.g. fraud, bullying etc.)
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Superannuation - Total and Permanent Disability Claims
  • Income Protection Insurance Claims
  • Probate and estate disputes
  • Matters arising in the health and aged care industries
  • Professional disciplinary matters
  • Coronial Inquests - where he has often been instructed to appear to protect the interests of nurses or midwives over many years
  • Criminal law sentencing and jury trials
  • Judicial review of administrative decision-making - where he has had successes challenging migration and prison/parole decisions
  • Planning and Environment Court
  • Commercial matters including leasing disputes and debt recovery

Gavin accepts briefs from:
  • Solicitors – in accordance with the “cab-rank” rule
  • In-house counsel, Industrial Officers and other suitable instructors – at his discretion (scope dependant)
  • Literary publishers – manuscript reading and pre-publication advice

Gavin can assist potential clients to find an appropriate solicitor if required.

​Outside of the law, Gavin is principal clarinet in the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra.
